FEATURED POST
Alex Macinnis – “Ultra’s For Ostomy – 2025”
This year, I’m stepping up in the most intense way I know how — by taking on Ultra’s for Ostomies for the second time. In support of Ostomy Canada Society’s national Step Up for Ostomy fundraiser, I’ll be running two ultramarathons on back-to-back days: a 50-mile trail race on Day 1, followed by a 50-kilometre race on Day 2. That’s over 130 km of rugged trail running — all with an ostomy. Last year, I gave it everything I had and came just 3 km short of completing Day 1. It was one of the toughest things I’ve ever done — but it lit a fire in me. This year, I’m returning stronger, more determined, and ready to go the full distance. Ultra’s for Ostomies is about more than just the miles. It’s about challenging misconceptions, breaking down stigma, and proving that life with an ostomy can still be powerful, purposeful, and full of adventure. Every dollar raised goes directly to Ostomy Canada Society, helping fund vital programs in education, advocacy, and community support for people living with ostomies across the country.

Hannah Spencer
Hi my name is Hannah, I’m 24 years old and I have an ostomy! It saved my life, just as it does for thousands of other Canadians each year. I was diagnosed with moderate ulcerative colitis at the age of 16 after having symptoms off and on for about a year. I was expecting the diagnosis because the blood in my stool coupled with the fact my mom had received the same diagnosis years earlier when she was 15 were pointing to ulcerative colitis.

Jenn Moore
As a personal trainer, health coach, and nutrition coach, my life’s work revolves around empowering others to embrace their strength and vitality. But nothing prepared me for the journey I embarked upon when I became an ostomate. Facing ostomy surgery was one of the most challenging experiences of my life. It tested not only my physical resilience but also my emotional fortitude. In those moments of uncertainty and vulnerability, I discovered the profound importance of support, education, and community. That’s why I’m honored to serve as an ambassador for Ostomy Canada Society. This incredible organization has been a beacon of hope and a source of invaluable resources for over 150,000 Canadians living with an ostomy . Their commitment to improving the lives of ostomates is unwavering, and their programs have made a tangible difference in countless lives.

As many of you know, I was diagnosed with a very rare genetic condition called (Sessile) Serrated Polyposis Syndrome a few years ago (thankfully so far NO other family members appear to have it). It takes ONE polyp to turn into colon cancer, and I had 100s.. “innumerable” infact.. If it weren’t for our father having Stage IV colon cancer, I probably wouldn’t have found out until it was too late, he very likely saved my life. I was given the choice of 100% chance of cancer or having a total proctectomy and colectomy and having an ileostomy for the rest of my life (I’ll give you a minute to do a bunch of googling).
